About The Position

The school nurse is responsible for implementing the school health program, assisting with student well-being and completing health related tasks; does related work as required.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid state license as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse, to practice professional nursing in Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and updates student health records, immunization records, emergency information, and required reports.
  • Documents clinic services in the Student Information System.
  • Ensures compliance with confidentiality laws (HIPAA/FERPA), IDEA, diabetes care requirements, and other health regulations.
  • Performs related clerical duties (typing, filing, duplicating).
  • Administers medications and prescribed medical procedures with proper authorization.
  • Provides routine and emergency first aid; assists sick or injured students and staff until additional help arrives.
  • Manages outbreaks of infectious illnesses in coordination with health authorities.
  • Provides health-related counseling sensitive to student needs.
  • Calls parents of ill students; assists ill students as needed until parent arrives.
  • May develop or assist with development of Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies; may educate appropriate staff on necessary components of such health care plan including criteria for medical emergencies and specific actions to take.
  • Informs and advises administrators and staff on student health issues, within privacy regulations.
  • Trains and maintains a list of staff as clinic backups in First Aid/CPR/Heimlich and medication administration.
  • Provides guidance and training to staff on procedures for students with special health needs, including IHCPs and emergency responses (e.g., allergies, diabetes).
  • Maintains and secures the school clinic, supplies, and medications (including controlled substances).
  • Develops or assists with Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs).
  • Refers additional health concerns as appropriate to a guidance counselor, school psychologist, physician, Child Protective Services, school administrator or health department officials.
  • Performs other health-related duties as assigned.
