About The Position

The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability and the early detection and correction of health problems. The School Nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers to promote a healthy school environment and community. The School Nurse uses clinical knowledge and judgment to provide health care to students, oversee school health services, policies, and programs, and promote health education.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1-year work experience as a registered nurse within the last 3 years.
  • Registered Nurse as defined by section 20-87a of Connecticut General Statues
  • Valid Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Connecticut
  • Current CPR certification for Professional Rescuer
  • Valid State of Connecticut driver's license
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with colleagues, parents and children.
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • School nursing, public health, pediatrics, emergency department or critical care nursing experience preferred
  • BSN preferred.
  • School Nurse Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collects, organizes and maintains required health records for students to attend school in compliance with State of Connecticut Department of Public Health Guidelines and Trumbull Board of Education Policy.
  • Student health records include a health and development history, immunization records, physical exams and medication administration records.
  • Notify Director of Nursing, School Health Coordinator and Building Administration about students with compliance concerns.
  • Assess students and provide nursing care and first aid as needed/ordered.
  • Initiate emergency interventions for students and staff as needed.
  • Document daily log of visits in electronic medical record.
  • Advocate for the health rights of children and their families; support the educational process.
  • Recommend provisions for a school health environment conducive to learning for students with acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Promote a community of health and safety for students and building staff.
  • Participate in student health screenings per State of Connecticut Department of Education guidelines and evaluate findings for deficits in vision, hearing, scoliosis.
  • Make appropriate referrals for follow up when needed.
  • Perform selected treatments per standing orders and individual physician orders.
  • Administer medications to students with physician order and parent permission according to State of Connecticut Department of Public Health regulations
  • Develop, update and maintain Individualized Health Care plans and Emergency Health Care Plans for students with chronic & acute health conditions; participate in planning meetings (504s, Planning & Placement Teams, Individualized Education Plans)
  • Prepare monthly and annual statistical reports and surveys as directed by the School Nurse Coordinator and Director of Nursing.
  • Share monthly data with building administration regarding health trends and general school community health
  • Attend nursing department meetings and building faculty meetings.
  • Maintain nursing office, equipment and supplies in an organized and safe manner.
  • Assist in the formation of health policies, as well as goals and objectives for the provision of school health to Trumbull children.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of Trumbull Board of Education Policies, the school health manual, and standing orders
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with key school building staff: administration, faculty, guidance, physical education personnel, secretaries and custodians
  • Participate in attendance/truancy process as outlined by building protocol.
  • Educate staff and teach specific procedures/interventions for the safety and well-being of students with medical conditions.
  • Delegates nursing tasks to designated staff in accordance with Connecticut Nurse Practice Act.
  • Document and maintain records of delegation training.
  • Provides medication administration training as needed to staff.
  • Present blood-borne pathogens training to school staff annually.
  • Prepare first aid kits for each building including small first aid packets for classrooms as needed
  • Communicate to appropriate school staff the nature of a student's medical condition or special health care need and collaborate with faculty to develop a plan for classroom management of medical condition to facilitate educational process.
  • Document outcome.
  • Meet with teachers and school staff to educate them about the health office, health services offered and classroom emergency procedures for first aid.
  • Participate in State of Connecticut Mandated Reporter Training every 3 years.
  • Participate in identification, reporting and management of students suspected of being abused or neglected.
  • Adhere to Town of Trumbull Department of Nursing Monthly Duties checklist as applies to school grade levels served.
  • Maintain current annual continuing education and personal and professional development.
  • Respond to public health emergencies as needed by the Town of Trumbull.
  • May be required to travel to/from and cover other schools health offices in district as needed.
