About The Position

The School Nurse administers and coordinates the health services program. This role involves conducting school health services, vision, hearing, and other required screenings. The nurse dispenses prescribed medication with doctor's orders and parent permission, monitors immunization requirements, and provides emergency care in the event of illness or accident. Maintaining up-to-date cumulative health records on all students is a key responsibility, as is reporting to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters. The position also involves preparing and submitting reports to the Superintendent/designee and State Board of Health, and participating with school staff in developing and implementing a total school health program. The School Nurse assists teachers in adapting the school program to meet the needs of individual students by communicating with the Special Education Department and serves as a liaison between the school and community health and welfare agencies and the medical profession. Counseling with students and parents to secure needed medical, dental, or other treatment is also part of the role. The nurse is expected to participate in staff development as required by campus administrator and attend local, state, and/or national professional conferences or workshops, while maintaining a consistent professional demeanor and appearance and ensuring compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics. Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.

Requirements

High school graduate or GED equivalent
Licensed Registered Nurse
Valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicles used to travel to district
Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills (oral and written)
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
Ability to use a personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to follow and successfully complete both written and verbal instructions
Ability to communicate and to maintain effective working relationships with all athletic staff, administrators, other personnel, and the general public
Excellent customer service skills
