About The Position

McDowell Friends School (MMFS) invites applications for a full-time School Nurse beginning immediately. The School Nurse will support the mission of the school by ensuring the health and wellness of the school community. Provide daily and ongoing health care to the school community and communicate necessary information in a timely manner. Oversee and maintain accurate and up-to-date health records for the school community. Work collaboratively with the health staff.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse in New York State.
  • 2+ years of direct experience in a pediatric or urgent care setting.
  • Familiarity with professional and technical emerging knowledge.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to multitask.
  • Compassionate with good communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with school-age children (K-12) and external agencies.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to a new environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the private education sector.
  • Independent school system a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school-age children.
  • Provides health assessments.
  • Obtains an annual health history and updates as necessary.
  • Observes the child for development and health patterns in making a nursing assessment.
  • Identifies abnormal health findings.
  • Develops and implements student health plans.
  • Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
  • Initiates referral to parents, school personnel, or community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow-through.
  • Provides ongoing health counseling for students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
  • Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students.
  • Plans and implements school health management protocols.
  • Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases.
  • Provides health education and anticipatory guidance.
  • Provides direct health education as needed, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health.
  • Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
  • Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
  • Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school, and community.
  • Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.
  • Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
  • Manages and administers medication (including controlled substances) as prescribed by physician or designee.
  • Monitors parameters and reports to parents, physicians, and teachers as necessary.
  • Accompanies students and faculty on day trips.
  • Ensures first aid bags are prepared with appropriate supplies, emergency medications and medications needed for trips.
  • Completes accident reports for employees injured onsite timely.
  • Order supplies for the nursing office as needed.
  • Meets and communicates regularly with Senior School RN.
  • Updates administration regarding emerging health issues for emergencies.
