About The Position

The School Nurse's primary goal is to maximize each student's potential to learn and grow by providing excellent health and nursing care. This role involves identifying specific health problems, educating students and staff, intervening when necessary, and interpreting medical data to support students' educational needs within the district.

Requirements

  • Current Mississippi Nursing License
  • Registered nurse
  • B.S. in Nursing preferred
  • Maintain a high standard of professional conduct in compliance with the Mississippi Code of Ethics.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough physical assessments on students to identify health problems that may interfere with educational testing and performance.
  • Provides follow-up and referral services, including obtaining resources, making appointments, and gathering necessary medical information for students.
  • Monitors, identifies, and provides information regarding contagious diseases, social issues, or other health problems that impact student performance and well-being.
  • Serves as a liaison between school faculty and the medical community, responding to inquiries, obtaining release forms, and interpreting medical data.
  • Provides first aid to students and instructs district personnel on first aid procedures.
  • Administers first aid at local Special Olympics events.
  • Offers health counseling to students, school personnel, and parents on topics such as chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Acts as a liaison for reporting child abuse to appropriate social services departments.
  • Conducts staff development sessions for school personnel and classroom presentations to minimize health problems in the school community.
  • Participates in continuing education to enhance health services for students and personnel.
  • Establishes a network with other nurses to share ideas and improve health services.
  • Conducts educational programs on the recognition, treatment, and control of pediculosis.
  • Conducts an educational program for fifth-grade girls on menstruation (with parental permission).
  • Performs vision screening for students in grades one and four, and for any other student referred by a teacher or parent, providing follow-up and referral information.
  • Records and submits accurate assessment data reports related to physical assessments.
