About The Position

The School Health Technician works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse to provide direct student care within the School Nursing Program. This role involves administering medications, performing treatments, documenting care, maintaining the clinical environment, and responding to emergencies. The technician also plays a role in health education and communication with school staff, students, and families. This position requires excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently within a professional framework and maintain confidentiality. The role may involve irregular schedules based on student and community needs.

Requirements

Current valid CPR.
High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum of one year of clinical experience.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy to reduce errors in judgment concerning utilization of resources and students.
Ability to utilize initiative and independent action required within the general framework of professional responsibilities.
High degree of confidentiality.
Ability to work irregular schedules dependent on the needs of students/community.
Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds.
Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.
Must be able to work in noisy environments and be self-directed to complete jobs as ordered.
Must be able to remain calm under stressful situations.
Must be able to assess and respond to multiple situations simultaneously.
Must be able to assist co-workers in multiple overlapping tasks simultaneously.
Must be able to prioritize job tasks and organize work space to be efficient and conducive to completing work tasks as assigned in a timely manner.

Nice To Haves

Preferred certification from an accredited technical school for CNA or MA.
Preferred 1 year pediatric patient care experience.
Preferred graduate of an accredited Technical School for Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant.
Strong preference for pediatric experience.
Experience working with economically disadvantaged population preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide direct student care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse according to established standards and plan of care.
Utilize appropriate decision-making for treatments based on student condition, emergency guidelines, and consultation with the School Nurse.
Document all treatments in the student record.
Recognize the need for and facilitate referrals to healthcare providers.
Administer medications and perform treatments according to established standards/plan of care.
Perform point of care testing and quality controls.
Document legibly using concise terms, correct terminology, and approved abbreviations.
Maintain a clinical environment, supplies, and equipment conducive to safe healthcare in the school setting.
Comply with accreditation body standards.
Recognize and respond to emergencies in the school setting.
Utilize the Georgia Registry of Immunization Tracking program (GRITS).
Participate in health educational programs as requested by the school.
Participate in CHNH sponsored community events.
Utilize effective interpersonal and communication skills for optimal student care and activities.
Actively seek and provide ongoing discussion and feedback related to student healthcare with SHH/School staff/student/parent.
Demonstrate effective communication and problem-solving skills, including active listening, tact, diplomacy, and assertiveness.
Communicate effectively via email with both NH and the School District.
Consult with the Program Coordinator or Registered Nurses regarding clinical issues/situations.
Notify the Program Coordinator when a student's condition requires emergency medical treatment.
Perform annual self-evaluation, including goals and objectives.
Participate in school/community-based meetings and committees related to school health/pediatrics.
Apply self-reflection using supervisory/co-worker feedback for professional development.
Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Complete annual competency training and mandatory continuing education specific for School House Health.
