About The Position

The Lafourche Parish School Board is seeking a School Custodian for Lockport Middle School. This role involves performing cleaning and preventive maintenance tasks, housekeeping duties, assisting with the transportation of tools and supplies, and ensuring a safe work environment. The custodian will also be responsible for checking and replacing light bulbs, inspecting emergency lighting, and performing other duties as assigned by their supervisor. The position requires a professional attitude, adherence to board policies, and effective communication skills. Punctuality and consistent attendance are expected, along with a strong commitment to safety protocols and maintaining an orderly work environment. This is a full-time, 12-month position with a probationary period of 90 days.

Requirements

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in various situations and maintenance of the school
Ability to perform work and care for tools, materials, and equipment safely
Valid driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record
Possess the temperament to work with and around employees and/or children
Grasp, lift, maneuver, carry, push, pull, move, and set down (60 lbs.) objects on a daily basis safely
Ability to analyze emergency situations accurately and take prompt actions
Ability to read and write and make accurate arithmetic computations
Ability to climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding
Ability to operate and maintain a safe work environment for one self and other employees
Safety oriented
Pass a physical examination

Responsibilities

Performs cleaning and preventive maintenance tasks on tools and equipment
Performs housekeeping duties in the maintenance of classrooms, grounds, and entire site
Assist in transporting tools, supplies, equipment, and materials as needed on school sites
Improves skills by attending training opportunities
Ability to operate power tools, such as saws, drills, wrenches, and various tools
Ability to make simple measurements, cuts, bends, shapes, applies, mixes, or otherwise handle materials and substances in accordance with instructions
Ability to operate small machinery (weed eaters, blowers, mowers, and chain saws)
Check lighting in buildings and classrooms and replace any burnt bulbs as necessary
Check emergency exit lighting and emergency lights in buildings monthly
Performs all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or Superintendent

Understands and interprets written and verbal instructions from immediate supervisor and gives clear written and oral instructions to others as required
Accurately compiles data, summarizes information and provides written reports when required
Answers the telephone and receives visitors in a courteous and efficient manner
Follows the chain of command for various administrative procedures
Reports to work at the assigned time
Attends work consistently
Contacts Supervisor when absent
Scans in or out using the employee scan system as appropriate
Completes task in a safe manner as prescribed by the Safety Department or by the employee's profession/craft
Maintains a neat and orderly work environment
Dresses appropriately for the job assigned and in compliance with state law and board policy
Displays employee ID tag at all times while on duty
Reports any unsafe conditions or any incidents of injury or damage immediately to the appropriate official
