About The Position

This position directs the work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school. Daily time sheets are maintained, and the position holds security responsibility for the school, including managing 'night lights'. The role may involve supervising student help and operating power equipment like lawn mowers. Additionally, the School Custodian III may perform the typical duties of lower-level custodians if necessary.

Requirements

  • Progressively responsible work experience in one or a combination of the following areas: (a) Janitorial or related custodial work such as sweeping, dusting and cleaning of buildings; (b) Grounds maintenance work experience including such activities as cleaning, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping and raking; (c) General laboring experience such as moving materials, furniture and equipment; loading and unloading trucks; carrying, unloading and stacking tools and supplies for skilled craftsman; and digging trenches and ditches.
  • For School Custodian III, at least one year of the work experience must have been comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service.
  • For the School Custodian III level, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of supervisory aptitude.
  • Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by details to supervisory positions; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in assignments; or by favorable appraisals of a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions.
  • Has charge of cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums and loud speaker systems.
  • Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants and lawns.
  • Requisitions, receives, stores and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school assigned and takes periodic inventories of such supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records of supplies dispensed and of equipment issued.
  • Makes reports on work accomplished and of unusual happenings or accidents.
  • Keeps daily time sheets.
  • Has security responsibility for the school.
  • Turns "night lights" on and off at proper hours.
  • May supervise student help when assigned.
  • May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers.
  • May perform the typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary.
