About The Position

The School Crossing Guard works during the school year to control vehicular traffic and pedestrians in school zones. Employees are responsible for getting children safely to and from school, requiring employees to work a split shift, morning and afternoon with time off in between.  Pay Grade: 41H Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

Requirements

  • Attend and successfully complete on-the-job training that will consist of demonstration and practical participation; or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate and deal with the public and school age children in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time with intermittently bending, twisting and reaching.
  • Knowledge of pedestrian traffic rules as well as common traffic laws provided by state and city ordinances.
  • Knowledge of Hand and arm signals.
  • Ability to learn simple techniques from reasonable instructions.
  • Ability to cooperate and work with other personnel.
  • Knowledge of the use of hand signals, whistles, traffic control devices.
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one by the date of employment.
  • Must have access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
  • Must be available to work morning and afternoon shifts.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions – duties are performed outside.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass a physical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Controls vehicular traffic and pedestrians in school zones in such a manner that school children or other pedestrians are not endangered when crossing the street, driveway, or intersections.
  • Coordinates and times the stopping of vehicular traffic in such a way as not to cause congestion.
  • Cautions and/or reports drivers who violate school crossings or pedestrian right-of-ways.
  • Checks and reports any questionable safety hazards regularly that exist at or near the assigned school crossing zones.
  • Establishes a cooperative and working relationship with the school staff, in assigned crossing zone.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed.
