About The Position

Under limited supervision, this role is responsible for supervising crossing guards at multiple sites to ensure student pedestrian safety in designated school crossing locations. The position involves scheduling, coordinating, and controlling all aspects of crossing guard operations throughout the year, along with performing supervisory activities for assigned staff.

Requirements

Must have a valid Driver's License and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
Two years of public safety experience.
Ability to work flexible hours, to include all shifts and sites necessary to accommodate crossing guard schedule.
Knowledge of the safe crossing guard procedures.
Knowledge of basic child behavior.
Skill in verbal communication.
Ability to perceive and respond to potential hazardous and uncertain situations.
Ability to respond quickly to potential emergency situations
Ability to bend from the waist and/or twist.
Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather.
Ability to establish and effective communication and working relationships with town employees and the public.
Ability to use personal vehicle to travel to assigned school crossing locations.
Ability to read, see, hear, talk, write, and sit for long periods of time.
Ability to stand and walk continuously for up to one and a half (1 ½) hours.
Ability to repeatedly lift and carry objects weighing up to five (5) pounds upright continuously for 1 to 2 minutes at a time.
Ability to hear and see approaching traffic.
Ability to bend arms and push or pull a child weighing up to 100 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Successful completion of sixty (60) credit hours of college from a regionally accredited college or university is preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs daily field checks to ensure appropriate staffing of and safety at assigned school crossing locations.
Coordinates substitutes for vacant locations and reports unstaffed school crossing locations.
Communicates potential safety issues to supervisor and community stakeholders.
Monitors and reports pedestrian counts at assigned school crossing locations and makes staffing recommendations.
Prepares and submits required reports daily, weekly, monthly, etc.
Monitors traffic flow to identify safe gaps in traffic through which pedestrians can safely cross the street.
Directs and/or escorts pedestrians across the street in designated areas, stopping traffic as necessary.
Communicates safe street crossing procedures and other information to students and adults.
Develops and maintains community relations, including with school district(s) and PTA organization(s), as they pertain to the crossing guard program; works with school district administrators regarding crosswalk issues.
Receives and resolves public inquiries and complaints.
Gains cooperation of children and reports uncooperative or unsafe behavior of children to school staff and/or supervisor.
Monitors the immediate area for unsafe and/or suspicious activity; records accurate description of suspicious person(s) or vehicle(s); reports unsafe and/or suspicious activity to a supervisor or law enforcement, in the event of an emergency.
Performs full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, discipline and recommendation for termination.
Performs the duties of a crossing guard.
Performs other duties as assigned.
