About The Position

Arlington County's Police Department (ACPD) is seeking to hire multiple School Crossing Guards for Arlington Public Schools (APS) located around the County. The role involves providing vehicular and pedestrian traffic control to promote maximum safety for children traveling to and from school. The work is typically limited to school hours but may change due to emergencies. The APS serves a diverse population, including parents and children for whom English may be a second language.

Requirements

No experience required.
Must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record.
Alternatively, must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.
Must sign a release authorizing the County to obtain background information.
Must complete each section of the application including supplemental questions.
Must be accessible during school hours by telephone.
Must be willing to work in all types of weather.

Responsibilities

Directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic at school crossings and assisting school children and other pedestrians crossing the street.
Reporting accidents and directing traffic until officers arrive.
Promoting safety awareness and advising officers of safety problems at school crossings.
Performing bi-annual pedestrian and vehicle counts at crossings.
Reporting to worksite promptly.
Being accessible during school hours by telephone to respond to emergency schedule changes.
Exercising mature and alert judgment.
Contending firmly and courteously with the public, particularly school-age children.
Working in all types of weather.
