About The Position

Arlington County’s Police Department is hiring multiple School Crossing Guards to serve Arlington Public Schools at locations around the County. The role provides vehicular and pedestrian traffic control and promotes the safety of children traveling to and from school. Work is generally limited to the hours when school is open, recessing, or closing, but schedules may change at short notice because of inclement weather or other emergencies. Guards may also be assigned to special events, summer school, and other activities. The position requires prompt arrival at assigned worksites, availability by telephone during school hours to respond to emergency schedule changes, mature and alert judgment, and the ability to interact firmly and courteously with the public, particularly school-age children. Guards must be willing to work in all types of weather and must use personal or public transportation to reach assignments. The role typically involves 12.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with schedules determined by the needs of the assigned school. Some weekend and holiday work may be required. Applicants must complete all sections of the application and supplemental questions; an attached resume does not replace the completed application. A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted, including criminal, driving, education, professional licensure, and credit history checks. Candidates receiving consideration must also undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination and authorize the County to obtain background information. Applicants must possess or obtain a valid driver’s license by appointment and provide or authorize access to an official driving record, or be able and willing to use alternative transportation to perform assigned duties. Starting salary is commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
