The School Counselor will promote the school system's counseling program by possessing the knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes necessary to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling program. This role provides system support through effective school counseling program management and support for other educational programs. The counselor will offer direct and indirect services with and for students, including responsive services through individual and small-group counseling, consultation, and referral skills. They will implement the school counseling curriculum through effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions. Additionally, the counselor will facilitate the delivery of counseling services by conducting group counseling/advisement with students in educational, career, and social-emotional areas, coordinating with local school staff for supportive classroom activities, assisting with the interpretation of standardized group testing, and ensuring students receive appropriate career and college readiness advisement. Consultation with school staff and parents, promotion of community resources, advocacy for equity, and engagement in professional development are also key aspects of this role. The counselor must follow professional practices consistent with local school and system policies, interact professionally with all stakeholders, maintain confidentiality, work cooperatively with colleagues, model correct language use, and demonstrate accurate content knowledge. Compliance with policies and regulations, punctuality, maintaining required plans, implementing the designated counseling core curriculum, maintaining accurate records, attending meetings, and complying with employment contracts are also essential. The counselor will act in a professional manner, assume responsibility for the counseling program, take precautions to protect records and facilities, and supervise students. For students in grades 6-12, the counselor will provide information on postsecondary plans, financial aid, and scholarships, plan and coordinate the advisement program, evaluate transcripts, review records for course selections and placement, and conduct exit interviews for withdrawing students. The role also includes referring students to local school support teams and performing other assigned duties.
