About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the principal or designee, the counselor will work collaboratively with school staff, administration, students, parents/guardians, and the broader East Valley community to form connections with all students. By fostering a sense of belonging, the counselor will empower students to thrive academically and socially within a caring and supportive environment. Counselors must be committed to implementing Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports (PBIS), Restorative Practices, Social Emotional Learning, and effective Academic Learning Strategies.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State Teaching certificate, no later than the first contracted day of the 2025/2026 school year with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations.
  • School Counselor endorsement required.
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later).
  • I9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • Completion of all district required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a secondary school counselor strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with current counseling practices, including Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and the ASCA National Model.
  • Understanding of Section 504 and IDEA regulations and their implications for school counselors.
  • Understand and apply current educational developments and instructional methodologies.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts and adapting to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Display enthusiasm, optimism, and motivation towards teaching and student learning.
  • Participate in school, district, and community events.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds or 33% of body weight, whichever is less.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and lead MTSS building-wide through data collection, intervention systems, and evidence-based strategies.
  • Facilitate and implement RTI initiatives within the MTSS system of support.
  • Lead and implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices.
  • Develop and deliver professional development on PBIS, Restorative Practices, and RTI to staff.
  • Support the implementation of the Reset Room and Room Service in collaboration with administration.
  • Support the BECCA and Community Truancy Board program as part of the MTSS team.
  • Participate in the Guiding Coalition as an active member of the team.
  • Demonstrates understanding and ability to implement a trauma-informed learning environment where the needs of the whole child are accounted for.
  • Provide individual and group counseling services to students.
  • Consult with parents, staff, and students to recommend strategies and programs that support students’ academic, social, and emotional needs and progress.
  • Collaborate with district counselors and staff to support student transitions.
  • Communicate with staff and administration regarding high-risk students and referrals to external services or alternative programs.
  • Develop and deliver presentations in classrooms and parent events.
  • Promote PACE Character Education.
  • Facilitate family conferences and related activities.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate student records.
  • Participate in a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to use data to support student growth.
  • Know current state and district graduation requirements and be able to advise students toward meeting them.
  • Adhere to ASCA ethical and confidentiality standards.
  • Pursue professional growth through coursework, workshops, and reading.
  • Exhibit flexibility, high-stress tolerance, reliability, punctuality, and confidentiality.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain a consistent presence at the assigned work site(s) and work the regular work hours specified by the contract.
  • Professionally interact with a diverse range of colleagues, members of the public, and students.
  • Comply with and uphold all district policies and all applicable laws.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
