About The Position

The School Counselor provides a comprehensive counseling program for students, specifically offering services to meet the needs of assigned students. This role involves consulting with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance effectiveness in helping students and providing support to other educational programs. The counselor implements the District’s guidance curriculum through classroom units and infusion in content areas, articulating and applying a comprehensive school counseling philosophy. They are expected to understand how students learn and develop, applying that knowledge in practice, and utilizing counseling strategies that promote learning. The counselor demonstrates the belief that all students can learn, encouraging achievement at the highest level for each student, and promotes a positive self-concept in students. Key aspects include guiding individuals and groups of students through educational and career planning, providing individual and group counseling for developmental, preventive, and remedial needs, and identifying appropriate strategies and resources for students facing academic failure, attendance issues, personal challenges, and crises. The role also involves consulting with various stakeholders, referring students to specialists or agencies, promoting partnerships, and participating in school activities and intervention teams.

  • Minimum qualifications include a valid Iowa teaching certificate.
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess proper state certification and licensure for the position.
  • The employee is expected to demonstrate continued professional growth specific to the program(s).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical to the success of this position.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups from all levels of the organization, including staff, principals, and central administration.
  • Communication will include individual to large group presentations as well as written communications and reports.
  • The individual must have effective listening skills.
  • The individual must have a solid background in assessment and have the ability to interpret data, which may be very complex and varied.
  • Must be able to apply assessment strategies and link assessment data analysis to school improvement, curriculum, and professional development.
  • Position requires the individual to be competent in a variety of methods in research and information gathering through technology.
  • The ability to present and communicate through technology is required.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and uses counseling strategies and resources that are appropriate to the individual and special needs of students in the areas of academic failure, attendance, personal, and crisis counseling.
  • Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.
  • Refers students with problems to appropriate program specialists or community agencies.
  • Promotes partnerships and maintains regular communication.
  • Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school.
  • Participate in and facilitate the intervention team process.
  • Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.
  • Maintains accurate records and appropriate oral and written communication.
  • Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to the achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
