About The Position

The School Counsellor is responsible for providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

Requirements

  • Valid NS teaching license
  • Elementary or Secondary Endorsement
  • Master’s degree in Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or equivalent
  • Reviewed and demonstrated proficiency with the CCPA Code of Ethics and Standard of Practice in their role as a School Counsellor.
  • Understanding of the MTSS Framework and supporting the Tiers of Intervention including the importance of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP)
  • Excellent communication (written, oral, and electronic), problem solving, organization, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.
  • Working as a contributing member of Student Planning Teams and Teaching Support Teams.
  • Collaborating with school and inter-agency teams to support early intervention strategies, coordination of services, problem solving and program planning.
  • Working as a contributing member of school program planning and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring individualized programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students.
  • Applying knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Applying training and experience to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students.
  • Employing non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Demonstrating teaching strategies and coaching school staff as needed.
  • Maintaining and promoting confidentiality as the norm.
  • Planning and developing training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviours of concern.
  • Communicating and working alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Valuing the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.
  • Promoting and maintaining confidentiality regarding records and documentation.
