About The Position

Quality Staffing, Inc. is seeking experienced Food Service Workers/School Cooks for a contract position with the Tennessee School for the Blind (TN TSB) in Nashville, TN. This is a 1st shift position, working Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Friday from 5:30 am to 2:30 pm. The role involves preparing and cooking food according to established recipes and dietary guidelines in an institutional setting, reporting to the building Kitchen Manager.

Requirements

  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and serve meals and snacks in compliance with approved menus provided by a Registered Dietitian.
  • Familiarity with USDA meal requirements for children in terms of portion size and nutritional content.
  • Basic knowledge of child nutrition, including managing food allergies and dietary restrictions.
  • Basic knowledge of how to perform simple arithmetic operations, such as working with fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Basic knowledge of interpreting technical data, writing diverse documents, and leading group conversations.
  • Ability to maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness in food preparation areas, including regular cleaning of kitchen equipment, countertops, stove, refrigerator, and garbage cans.
  • Ability to manage food inventory, including keeping an accurate count of supplies and requesting approval for any menu changes.
  • Must complete First Aid and Infant CPR training as required.
  • Ability to lift and move kitchen supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Capability to stand for extended periods during food preparation.
  • Must always demonstrate proper hygiene in food preparation.
  • Must comply with the State of Tennessee Employee Drug-Free Workplace Policy and other policies.
  • Must submit to and pass a TBI/FBI background check, to include Tennessee Federal criminal history checks, child abuse records, employment verification, and professional/personal reference checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in food preparation, particularly in a childcare or early childhood education setting is preferred.
  • Experience submitting monthly reports to the Health Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, or dinner items following specific recipes and meal plans, ensuring proper portion control and quality.
  • Adhere to food safety standards, including proper handling, storage, and preparation of food items.
  • Maintain a clean kitchen area, wash dishes, and sanitize all equipment.
  • Assist in managing food inventory by tracking ingredients and notifying supervisors of low stock.
  • Help with the receipt and storage of food supplies.
  • Collaborate with other kitchen staff to ensure timely meal service and adherence to dietary requirements.
  • Occasionally interact with students, staff, or customers to serve meals and accommodate dietary restrictions.
  • Log temperatures of food items and equipment.
  • Document food usage and follow procedures for food waste management.
  • Perform duties efficiently and in accordance with health regulations.
  • Ensure the welfare, health, and safety of all children during mealtimes.
  • Maintain an accessible file for children with food allergies.
  • Support other staff by occasionally cleaning toys and relieving staff for breaks.
  • Complete First Aid and Infant CPR training as scheduled.
  • Maintain clear communications with the supervisor and parents regarding food-related issues or concerns.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
