About The Position

Detroit Country Day School is seeking a skilled and dependable School Bus Maintenance Technician & Driver to keep our transportation fleet safe, reliable, and ready to serve students every day. This hands-on position is responsible for maintaining and repairing school buses and vehicles, performing preventative maintenance, conducting required inspections, and supporting daily transportation operations. In addition to fleet maintenance, this position serves as a substitute bus driver for routes, athletic events, and field trips as needed. Flexibility to respond to occasional after-hours transportation needs, including evenings, weekends, school breaks, and emergency situations, is essential. This position reports to the Transportation Supervisor and is a full-time, 12-month position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Valid CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, or the ability to obtain required endorsements.
  • Michigan School Bus Driver Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
  • Successful criminal background check, physical, and drug screening.
  • One to two years of experience in diesel, automotive, fleet, or commercial vehicle maintenance.
  • Strong mechanical and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, brakes, steering, and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and respond effectively to urgent transportation needs.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with the Transportation team.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach.
  • Use hands and fingers to handle tools, equipment, and vehicle components.
  • Lift and move automotive parts, equipment, and supplies.
  • Work in confined areas and awkward positions.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintain physical stamina necessary to complete repairs and maintenance tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of diesel or fleet mechanic experience, preferred.
  • ASE certifications, preferred.
  • Experience maintaining school buses or commercial vehicles, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on school buses, district vehicles, and transportation equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, and other mechanical systems.
  • Conduct pre- and post-repair testing to ensure vehicles are operating safely.
  • Prepare buses for daily service and complete major maintenance projects during school breaks and scheduled downtime.
  • Perform required State of Michigan school bus inspections and maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Assist with vehicle accident inspections, documentation, and repair coordination.
  • Drive regular routes, athletic trips, field trips, and special events as assigned.
  • Respond to transportation emergencies and provide after-hours support when necessary.
  • Maintain all required licenses, certifications, and driver qualifications.
  • Assist with transportation logistics and inter-campus deliveries.
  • Order and maintain inventory of repair parts, supplies, and maintenance materials.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and repair records.
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective repairs.
  • Provide and maintain personal mechanical tools; specialized equipment is supplied by the School.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized transportation garage.
  • Perform light exterior maintenance, including snow removal, salting, mowing, and general grounds upkeep around the transportation facility.
  • Support general transportation and facilities operations as needed.
