About The Position

DATTCO is a third-generation, family-owned passenger transportation company serving 30 school districts throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. The company’s 2,500 employees transport more than 140,000 students to and from school each year. DATTCO is hiring a School Bus Aide in Burrillville, Rhode Island. The role pays $19 per hour and is a part-time split-shift position, with 20 hours per week guaranteed. Work includes morning and afternoon student pickups and drop-offs.

The School Bus Aide supports students and the driver throughout school transportation runs. The aide assists students with boarding, exiting, crossings, safety equipment, and accommodations specified in their transportation plans; maintains appropriate student behavior and enforces bus safety rules; watches for and reports safety hazards; helps inspect the vehicle after each run; assists in emergency evacuations; and helps the driver follow the predetermined route sheet.

The role requires repeated entry to and exit from the vehicle and the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally, as well as bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs, and use vehicle safety equipment. Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must successfully complete required pre-employment screening, including state and national criminal background checks, registry checks, drug testing, and any other screening required by law, Rhode Island DMV, school district policy, or DATTCO policy.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to enter and exit the vehicle repeatedly and perform required vehicle inspections.
• Ability to bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs, and use vehicle safety equipment.
• Ability to assist passengers during boarding, exiting, and emergency evacuations.

Responsibilities

• Exit the bus at every stop and assist students with street crossings.
• Assist students as they enter and exit the bus.
• Check under and behind the tires before re-entering the bus.
• Assist students with accommodations included in their transportation plans.
• Maintain a reasonable level of good behavior among children on the bus, minivan, van, or car.
• Enforce school bus safety rules, including ensuring students remain seated, do not harm themselves or others, do not eat on the bus, and do not violate other safety regulations.
• Recognize dangerous situations that could affect student safety and report them to the bus driver immediately.
• Assist the driver with a spot inspection after each school run to ensure all children have exited the bus.
• Assist with buckling children and using other safety equipment as required by safety laws.
• Assist with evacuating children from the vehicle during emergencies.
• Assist the driver with directions according to a predetermined route sheet.
