School-Age Counselor – After School
About The Position
Healthy Kids Programs is hiring a School-Age Counselor for its After School Program at South Hampton Elementary School in Birmingham, Alabama, for the 2026–2027 school year. The part-time, non-exempt position follows the school calendar and runs Monday through Friday from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Pay is $15.00 per hour. The counselor supports children ages 5–12 in a safe, healthy, engaging environment. The role involves facilitating activities that encourage learning through play and positive experiences, supporting children's curiosity, creativity, and confidence, and serving as a positive role model. The counselor works with teammates and communicates with families while supporting daily program operations. Healthy Kids Programs provides childcare for school-age children enrolled in its program during the employee's work hours and on the days they work. Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Be medically cleared of communicable diseases, including TB.
- Be warm, friendly, and upbeat, with exceptional people skills.
- Be professional, reliable, and prompt.
- Be physically able to bend, stretch, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and maintain active supervision while participating in children's routines and activities.
Nice To Haves
- One year of experience working with children under 13 years of age is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate hands-on activities following the Healthy Kids Curriculum, including fitness, STEAM, academic, art, and other group activities, as well as homework completion.
- Provide a safe, healthy, and fun environment and act as a positive role model for children in the program.
- Observe state guidelines, Healthy Kids Extended Day Program policies, and host school policies.
- Support program operations, which may include attendance records, registration, and staffing responsibilities.
- Encourage children's curiosity, creativity, and confidence through play and positive experiences.
- Work effectively with teammates and communicate with families.
