About The Position

The Scenic Artist will be responsible for completing all artwork for sets, props, etc. for any production coming out of the scene shop. This role requires working independently, exercising good judgment and discretion, and keeping the paint area of the Scene shop organized and meeting safety requirements. The position is supervised by the Scenic Charge. The Scenic Artist will paint and finish all scenic elements as assigned, organize and maintain inventory of painting supplies and tools, and maintain the safety, order, and cleanliness of all paint areas and equipment. The role also involves remaining abreast of existing and emerging technologies and adhering to Liberty University policies. The Scenic Artist will work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ. This position may assist in the oversight of student workers, production students, and CSER students.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience, undergraduate degree, or comparable training.
  • Strong experience in scenic art, understanding different paint styles.
  • Knowledge of theatrical production processes, from design phase to strike.
  • Knowledge of all areas of a paint shop and its tools/equipment.
  • Must be able to follow a design through to completion.
  • Experience handling multiple productions at one time.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Computer skills.
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 40 or fewer pounds.
  • Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.

  • A degree in technical theatre or scenic art is preferred.
