About The Position

Operates and maintains a computerized vehicle weighscale; processes vehicles and performs related activities at Regional Waste Management sites.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of reading, writing, and math skills acquired through a grade 12 education plus 1 year of customer service and cash handling experience.
  • Knowledge of job-related Regional policies and procedures, related by-laws, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Communication and human relations skills to provide customer service and respond to customer inquiries (in person, phone) using tact and courtesy and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read licence plate numbers, tickets, reports, computer screen options, policies and procedures, bills of lading, and by-law 98-87 (e.g., speed limits on site, untarped loads, site rules).
  • Ability to update data in customer files, complete daily cash reconciliations, and manually record weighscale tickets if computers fail.
  • Computer skills with ability to use job-related software such as Geoware and accurately enter data.
  • Ability to operate a computerized vehicle weighscale.
  • Ability to operate a cash register and reconcile/balance daily receipts.
  • Must provide an acceptable Police Record Check (Level 2) for bondability.
  • Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.

Responsibilities

  • Enters incoming vehicle licence plate numbers to weighscale system, and checks customer data (e.g., material type, account status, Regional resident). Registers new vehicles to create customer accounts, as backup.
  • Processes customer payments (cash, cheques, credit cards, debit) and maintains cash floats. Balances point of sale machine at end of shift. Balances and prepares daily bank deposits for courier pickup. Signs bills of lading.
  • Prints, sorts, and files tickets. Manually records weighscale tickets when required.
  • Performs all janitorial duties, including cleaning and maintaining scalehouse and computer hardware, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning windows, and dusting.
  • Responds to general questions from the public regarding billing, recycling, and landfill services, and provides instructions/redirects, as appropriate.
  • Questions drivers regarding incoming waste, and provides information regarding handling materials such as contaminated soil, asbestos, and household hazardous waste.
  • Directs vehicles to landfill area, recycling centre, household hazardous waste depot, compost area, and other waste diversion programs. Hands out information brochures.
  • Processes outgoing vehicles, checking for appropriate material type, account, and weight.
  • At transfer stations, records and charges incoming vehicles. Instructs the public to ensure materials are deposited in correct bins, properly separated, and not contaminated. Checks bins for fullness and notifies for pickup. Maintains bin areas to ensure safe access for customers.
  • Monitors customers to ensure bins are used appropriately and safely. Checks and records used oil tank levels and reports to Environmental Program Officer.
  • Receives and posts faxes and mail on scalehouse bulletin board.
  • Maintains computerized weighscale, two-way radio, and point of sale machine in good working condition, and reports need for servicing.
  • Performs related duties, as assigned.
