About The Position

The Operations Section of King County’s Solid Waste Division (SWD) is inviting applications for two (2) Career Service positions. Join our team as a Scale Operator and play a vital role in delivering exceptional customer service while supporting our department and division goals related to environmental sustainability. As part of our dedicated team, you will help create a safe, efficient, and positive experience in customer service and customer experience, educational literature and public communications, safety, site design, and recycling improvements, to name a few. This is an exciting opportunity for you to become part of our work family. This role is responsible for managing point-of-sale operations at a King County Solid Waste facility, which includes processing customer fees, managing daily financial receipts, and securing funds according to established open/close procedures. A core focus is providing excellent customer service while educating a diverse public on waste disposal rules, unsecured load laws, and compliance ordinances. Additionally, the position requires maintaining accurate transaction records, managing Scale House supply Inventory, and utilizing strong problem-solving skills to independently or collaboratively handle emergency situations and system failures in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Working Knowledge cash handling and transaction management experience. (3-years preferred)
  • Demonstrated customer service experience with internal and external customers in a fast paced/high volume environment. (3-years preferred)
  • 10-key experience
  • Aptitude to work closely with others; experience communicating with a diverse range of staff and customers in a pleasant, non-judgmental, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner
  • Ability to work independently
  • Written and oral communication skills; organizational skills
  • This position requires the ability to travel in a timely manner to various work locations, including to sites which may not be served by public transportation. County vehicles may be available to utilize.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional customer service to internal stakeholders, TSOs, Engineering, Electricians, Mechanics, RES, Communications, and Internal Affairs—as well as external stakeholders, public/vendors by addressing inquiries, facilitating solutions, and ensuring understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Reconcile daily funds & receipts
  • Handle transactions that include cash, credit cards, Apple pay, King County vouchers using Point of Sale system (10- key on keyboard)
  • Daily reporting of transactions (i.e. print receipts, send documents to Leads at Bow Lake)
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with customers, coworkers, vendors, and other departments to exchange information, resolve issues, and support organizational objectives.
