About The Position

Fifth Third Bank is seeking an SBA Lead Underwriter to review and decide on small business loan requests within approved loan authority. This role involves assisting junior loan underwriters by providing expertise in financial analysis and loan structuring. The position is responsible for managing risk through open communication, adherence to policies, and ensuring a positive customer experience. The Lead Underwriter must consistently identify, assess, manage, monitor, and report risks within the Bank's risk appetite.

Requirements

  • College degree in accounting, finance, or economics or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5 years of total work experience.
  • 2 to 4 years of underwriting, credit, or originations experience, preferably in the banking or investment banking industry.
  • Thorough working knowledge of SBA SOP 50-10-6 and other SOP program guides.
  • Proficiency in basic software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Explorer.
  • Attentiveness to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized and able to manage several detailed tasks and processes concurrently.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent knowledge of B2B, CCAS, nCino, AFS, Appraisal systems, CLAS/LaserPro Loan Doc Prep Systems (or equivalent vendor systems), and other banking systems.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Underwriting new money to new borrowers.
  • Collaborating with relationship managers on initial deal review, modeling, and structuring.
  • Working with RMs on deal pre-clearance within the Structured Finance Group, Credit, Capital Markets/Syndications, and other departments.
  • Coordinating with RMs, customers, and third-party providers to obtain necessary due diligence information.
  • Utilizing all available resources to prepare credit approval documents and change in terms requests.
  • Coordinating with the RM and Credit to obtain proper credit approval.
  • Developing training and education guidelines for SBA lending.
  • Overseeing adherence to SBA credit and eligibility policies, ensuring compliance with government regulations and SBA guaranty.
  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge of all SBA products and services and informing leadership of new developments or modifications.
  • Engaging and managing legal counsel and negotiating legal documentation with RMs.
  • Completing and managing the closing, funding, and booking process in cooperation with the Funding Desk and Credit Collateral Operations.
  • Completing internal and external post-closing items.
  • Completing the underwriting process for deal amendments and restructurings.
  • Completing special projects and assignments as requested.
  • Potentially providing direct leadership and supervision to junior underwriters, credit analysts, and/or leadership program participants.
