About The Position

The Sawyer plays a crucial role in the Steel Service Center, responsible for the precise cutting of both metallic and nonmetallic workpieces. The position requires setting up and operating various power saws, including those used for cutting, slotting, grooving, mitering, and trimming materials according to exact specifications. The Sawyer must be adept at selecting and installing the appropriate blades, adjusting machine settings, and positioning workpieces accurately using various tools and fixtures. Precision and attention to detail are key, as the Sawyer must verify that the dimensions of the finished pieces match the specifications provided by prints, templates, or sample parts.

Requirements

  • Ability to apply basic math skills - fractions/decimal equivalents
  • Recognize different types of steel and how they affect cutting
  • Operate overhead and jib cranes safely
  • Match prints and routers to parts and stage for next operation
  • Perform initial quality control and appropriate marking for restock and inventory
  • Ability to differentiate speeds and feeds for different materials
  • Ability to straighten and grind parts to tolerance for additional processing
  • Perform conformance inspection to ensure quality parts
  • Foster and work within a team environment
  • Actively participates in safety programs and complies with all safety policies
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects at one time
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area
  • Displays attention to detail and consistently follows Standard Work Instructions (when available) when completing tasks
  • Communicates well with peers, supervisor, customers, vendors, and other departments
  • Knowledge of LEAN Principles

Responsibilities

  • Read tape measure to 1/32 of an inch
  • Read/use a tri-square
  • Print reading
  • Operate small grinders and deburring tools in a safe manner
  • Cut material for minimum drop/maximum yield
  • Safe rigging practices with chains, slings, magnets, plate clamps
  • Participates in Continuous Improvement efforts
  • Maintains safe and clean work environment
  • Other duties as assigned
