About The Position

The Saw & Stretcher Operator is directly responsible to the General Manager and/or a delegate. The primary function is to operate the saw and stretcher efficiently and cost-effectively while maintaining safety and quality standards. Regular communication with the press crew regarding safety or quality issues is essential.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma with some technical background and mechanical aptitude.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in an industrial environment.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Windows.
  • Understanding of measurements, tolerances, basic geometry, and numeracy comprehension.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs independently.
  • Ability to lift up to 100lbs in collaboration with a team member.
  • Willing to train.

Nice To Haves

  • Extrusion experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of machinery and ability to read drawings is an asset.
  • Other MS software is an asset.
  • Familiarity with extrusion software such as EPICS is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret work orders, specifications, and notes in EPICS.
  • Follow verbal instructions from the press supervisor and teammates.
  • Operate metalworking machines such as saws to cut or shape metal stock.
  • Check products for correct shapes, dimensions, and specifications using calipers and other measuring tools, including ASCONA scans.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on the saw and stretcher.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance (PM) checks on the saw, including lubrication levels and blade sharpness.
  • Follow work order specifications and packing instructions.
  • Input information into EPICS, such as weight and die variances.
  • Verify NCRs related to the saw.
  • Update rework/redtag line in EPICS if material is confirmed good at the saw.
  • Communicate information regarding low yields to press leads, including explanations and suggestions for corrective actions.
  • Inspect cut lengths, critical dimensions, and visually inspect material.
  • Ensure proper handling of material to maintain quality and product integrity.
  • Ensure skids are packed securely and material is clean, defect-free, and meets quality standards.
  • Measure and record weight to a minimum tolerance of 40 lbs.
  • Ensure efficient skid changeovers by being proactive with subsequent work orders.
  • Communicate issues with Press Leads, such as poor yield, die variance, weight discrepancies, and scanning issues.
  • Escalate mechanical downtime issues (e.g., saw blade or clamp malfunction) to the maintenance team immediately.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work line, focusing on 5S principles.
  • Ensure availability of materials (skids, separators, sandwiches) at the saw station.
  • Communicate with forklift drivers when materials are required.
  • Complete and record all quality checks at the required frequency at the saw.
  • Ensure Ascona scans are completed as per billet entries and product meets specifications.
  • Escalate issues immediately with quality technicians and press leads.
  • Ensure quality checks for visual and dimensional requirements are conducted.
  • Communicate any out-of-spec material to the press lead for decision-making (scrap or rectify).
  • Discuss issues with the following shift, including mechanical and work-order related matters, and ensure materials are available for startup.
  • Run the stretcher (live and dead ends) efficiently to ensure continuous material cleaning.
  • Ensure all stretched extrusion pieces are straight, twist-free, and meet quality requirements (visual A or B).
  • Regularly check dimensions and flatness, ensuring extrusions are not overstretched.
  • Batch material at the storage table with the correct number of pieces per batch.
  • Update EPICS notes as required.
  • Report any issues during or after stretching to press leads immediately.
  • Communicate concerns regarding dimensions and finish with the saw crew.
  • Report any malfunction in stretching equipment to press leads and the maintenance team.
  • Follow stretching instructions as per work order.
  • Comply with all quality-related policies, procedures, and system requirements.
