About The Position

Russel Metals is one of the largest metals distribution companies in North America, with a growing focus on value-added processing. It carries on business in three segments: metals service centers, energy field stores and steel distributors. Its network of metals service centers carries an extensive line of metal products in a wide range of sizes, shapes and specifications, including carbon hot rolled and cold finished steel, pipe and tubular products, stainless steel, aluminum and other non-ferrous specialty metals. Its energy field stores carry a specialized product line focused on the needs of the energy industry customers. Its steel distributors' operations act as master distributors selling steel in large volumes to other steel service centers and large equipment manufacturers mainly on an "as is" basis. The Saw Operator is responsible for producing parts that meet Sanborn Tube and Fab’s quality requirements. Success as a Saw Operator at Sanborn Tube and Fab means consistently producing the correct parts, at the correct quantity and quality, on schedule, while operating equipment safely and maintaining an organized work area.

Requirements

  • Manufacturing or machine-operation experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous saw operation experience.
  • Experience cutting tubing, pipe, bar stock, or structural material.
  • Experience with cold saws or automated saw equipment.
  • Forklift or overhead crane experience.
  • Experience working with an ERP or manufacturing production system.

Responsibilities

  • Operate tube and bar saw equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Set up saws according to work orders, drawings, programs, and established procedures.
  • Verify material type, size, length, quantity, and identification before cutting.
  • Load and unload tubing, bar stock, and other raw materials using appropriate material-handling equipment.
  • Accurately measure and inspect first-piece and production parts using tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring equipment.
  • Make adjustments to saw settings to maintain required dimensions and cut quality.
  • Monitor blade condition and replace blades or notify appropriate personnel when replacement is required.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks.
  • Identify and report nonconforming material or parts immediately.
  • Complete required production, quality, and material documentation.
  • Accurately record production quantities, scrap, downtime, and labor in the company ERP system.
  • Maintain proper material identification and traceability throughout the process.
  • Keep the saw area clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication as required.
  • Follow production schedules and communicate delays, material shortages, equipment problems, or quality concerns to the supervisor.
  • Work cooperatively with material handling, tube laser, bending, fabrication, and other production departments.
  • Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and OSHA-related procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities to improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • Verify dimensions against the applicable drawing or work instruction.
  • Confirm the correct material and material heat/lot identification when required.
  • Inspect parts for proper length, squareness, burrs, damage, and other specified characteristics.
  • Do not knowingly pass defective material to the next operation.
  • Stop production and notify the supervisor when a quality problem cannot be corrected through normal setup adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records when required.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Follow established machine guarding and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Use proper lifting and material-handling techniques.
  • Keep hands and body clear of moving equipment and cutting areas.
  • Operate forklifts, cranes, hoists, or other equipment only when properly trained and authorized.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, injuries, near misses, and equipment hazards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
