About The Position

Ellwood Specialty Metals Company is a leading distributor and producer of tool steels for various tooling applications, serving industries that create parts for automobiles, aircraft, and consumer products. Due to rapid growth, we are seeking a Saw/Flow Operator I to join our team in New Castle, PA. This role is responsible for receiving, storing, handling, and setting up predetermined material, operating automatic saw equipment to cut material to customer specifications, and ensuring quality through post-cut checks. The position reports to the Operations Manager.

Requirements

  • Working mechanical knowledge/aptitude applicable with experience.
  • Able to understand basic correspondence, instructions, rules, policies, graphs, and/or charts.
  • Able to learn from written passages by discerning the main idea or key facts.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and use basic numerical concepts (whole numbers, percentages) to complete job tasks.
  • Ability to use measuring devices such as tapes and gauges where reading is direct and obvious.
  • Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Hearing ability to exchange information with co-workers and management should issues with material or equipment be detected.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, stores, handles, cuts, and ships material to meet shop and customer requirements.
  • Loads and unloads material using a forklift or remote-operated overhead crane, positioning material as required.
  • Completes paperwork and inputs information into the computer system, updating inventory.
  • Sets up and operates saw equipment, selecting proper feeds and speeds, and adjusting as needed.
  • Maintains necessary coolant concentration, cleaning or replacing coolant as required.
  • Inspects the quality of the material during and after the cut to ensure the piece is square.
  • Uses measuring instruments such as tape measures and micrometers.
  • Checks identification on all material handled by stamping or marking with necessary numbers when required.
  • Places saw crop ends in scrap boxes according to material grade.
  • Performs saw blade changes when necessary.
  • Delivers material to the next area of operation as required.
  • Completes required production reports, using the computer system as required.
  • Reports defective material and faulty equipment to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department immediately.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and abides by all plant safety regulations and work rules.
  • Performs safety inspections on cranes, chains, slings, and magnets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
