About The Position
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Sanitation Worker to perform unskilled work in the collection of solid waste, brush/bulk items, and recyclable materials. The successful candidate will be responsible for tasks such as rolling refuse carts to the truck for dumping, sorting recyclable materials, picking up refuse cans from businesses, collecting brush and bulk items, operating loading and compressing mechanisms, assisting in unloading the truck at the disposal site, cleaning trucks and equipment, and reporting violations of SWM ordinances.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
- Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables
- Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear
- Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Ability to adjust focus

Responsibilities
- Roll refuse carts from curb or behind house to truck for dumping
- Sort recyclable materials at curb from recycling can and deposit in proper compartment of truck
- Pick up refuse cans from businesses and dump into truck
- Pick up certain small white goods material and other trash too large for carts and place in refuse trucks
- Collect brush and bulk items from alley/streets and deposit in truck
- Operate mechanism for loading, compressing and dumping of vehicles
- Assist in unloading truck at disposal site
- Clean area around cans/carts
- Clean truck and equipment in accordance with department policy
- Report violations of SWM ordinances to driver
