About The Position

Performs equipment operation in the collection and disposal of residential garbage and recycling materials in the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department. Employees in this class operate a motorized packer or related sanitation equipment on an assigned route to collect and dispose of residential household garbage and recycling materials. Work involves the operation of heavy packer trucks or other related equipment. Work requires skill in the operation of heavy equipment in tight spaces, in the dark, and/or on crowded streets and the ability to train and lead a team including strong safety awareness and precautions. Work is performed in accordance with established safety rules and regulations, and the employee is held accountable for the successful completion of the route and proper cleaning and maintenance of the truck. Employees are subject to hazards of sanitation work including working in an outside environment exposed to extreme cold, heat, noise, atmospheric conditions, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, oils, and skin irritates. Work is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by observation for efficiency and effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the street system of the Town.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of motorized sanitation equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards of the work and related safety precautions.
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations regarding the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Working knowledge of town policies and regulations regarding the collection and disposal of various solid waste materials.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance and minor repair of trucks.
  • Skilled in the operation of large trucks and heavy equipment in tight locations around traffic and overhead utility lines.
  • Ability to prepare simple records of work activities.
  • Ability to lead and team and train coworkers.
  • Ability to learn and follow established routes.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 20 pounds frequently; and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate a motorized sanitation equipment and distinguish traffic patterns to avoid injury to self and others.
  • Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of motorized vehicles; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a valid North Carolina grade B commercial driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a rear loading hydraulic loader packer or related sanitation equipment in the collection and disposal of garbage and recycling materials from residential and commercial areas of the Town.
  • Trains team members and watches out for the safety of team members and the public.
  • Participates in collecting cans and pulling to the truck for emptying; operates hydraulic lift and compactor mechanism.
  • Drives truck to landfill and to recycling center.
  • Performs maintenance such as welding, replacing parts, belts, lights, hydraulic lines, greasing, and checking fluids; ensures truck is checked before each route; cleans and deodorizes truck.
  • Makes records of new customers, fuel use, and unusual situations on route.
  • Removes dead animals from roadways.
  • Provides information to the public regarding solid waste policies and collection regulations.
  • May fill in for coworkers or other divisions.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Benefits

  • Salary range will increase 3% effective July 1, 2026.
