The City of High Point is seeking a Sanitation Equipment Operator I to join their team. This role involves operating sanitation equipment to collect solid waste from residents and businesses, ensuring the city remains clean and safe. Requirements

  • Valid North Carolina Class B CDL Driver’s License
  • Clean driving and safety record
  • Ability to lead and direct others for extended periods in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety standards and the ability to ensure compliance with OSHA and City policies
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public, both in person and via two-way radio or phone.
  • Must have the ability to perceive objects and surroundings clearly.
  • Medium to heavy work: Regularly exerting up to 50 pounds of force; occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance. Constant handling, reaching, and occasional fine motor work (e.g., picking or pinching).
  • Ability to apply logical thinking to tasks, respond promptly to situations, and follow safety regulations. Strong judgment skills are essential.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, sleet, and snow. Must be comfortable working outdoors in challenging conditions for extended periods.
  • Potential exposure to waste, recyclables, and other discarded materials. Work is subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.
  • Operate a variety of equipment, including automated side-loaders, rear-loaders, swap-loaders, bulk trucks, and front-end loaders.
  • Utilize equipment such as red and black boxes, green convenience site boxes, dumpsters, two-way radios, mobile carts, and Personnel Resolution tools.

Responsibilities

  • Safely drive and operate equipment used in solid waste collection, including automated side-loaders, rear-loaders, boom trucks, swap-loaders, and front-end loaders on assigned routes.
  • Lead and supervise a two-man crew, ensuring the safe and efficient collection of solid waste.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections, perform routine preventive maintenance, and ensure equipment is clean and well-maintained for optimal performance.
  • Report violations of the solid waste ordinance to the supervisor and ensure adherence to regulations and safety standards.
  • Drive assigned routes to collect and dispose of refuse, yard waste, debris, junked furniture, and appliances, properly disposing of materials at established sites.
  • Work as a productive member of a solid waste collection team, assisting in all aspects of refuse removal and working to ensure timely service.
  • Use mobile devices to log work or any infractions for accurate reporting and tracking.
  • Answer questions from citizens regarding the Environmental Services Division’s procedures and practices, providing friendly, knowledgeable service.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
