About The Position

The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. As a Sanitarian 4, you'll serve as a key regulatory and public health professional responsible for inspections, investigations, plan reviews, and compliance activities involving food safety, commercial body art facilities, tanning facilities, water vending units, and consumer protection programs. Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license
  • Three years of experience as a sanitarian; OR A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus two years of experience as a sanitarian.
  • Applicants must complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and supervising all aspects and activities of the Food and Drug Program in assigned regions.
  • Inspecting food, drug, and cosmetic manufacturers, and wholesale distributors to ensure compliance with the Sanitary Code according to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Good Warehousing Practices (GWPs).
  • Inspecting UV tanning facilities and Commercial Body Art (CBA) facilities to ensure site and procedural compliance with LAC Title 51.
  • Conducting complaint investigations as assigned.
  • Inspecting food manufacturers and distributors and commercial seafood establishments as required by the Federal Inspection Program (FIP) Contract.
  • Serving as a FIP inspection auditor in order to meet the requirements of the US FDA FIP contract.
  • Reviewing the plans for new Food and Drug Program/Milk and Dairy Program establishments within the assigned parishes.
  • Ensuring that proposed new facilities are compliant with LAC Title 51 requirements regarding design and construction of facilities, staff training, and testing of regulated products.
  • Reviewing product labeling to assure compliance with the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Law and the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1994, specifically targeting misbranded or adulterated products.
  • Drafting enforcement letters and compliance orders for noncompliant firms.
  • Independently seizing, overseeing and witnessing destruction of adulterated, misbranded or otherwise contaminated products regulated by the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Law.
  • Collecting samples of regulated products for state laboratory analysis to determine possible adulteration or contamination, which could be harmful to consumers.
  • Participating in emergency response activities associated with natural and man-made disasters.
  • Performing related work as assigned by supervisor.
  • Independently investigating all complaints within assigned area and documenting findings.
