About The Position

The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. As a Sanitarian 4, you’ll play a key role in protecting the health and safety of communities through leadership, technical expertise, inspections, investigations, and enforcement across multiple public health, environmental, and consumer protection programs. From retail food and onsite wastewater to institutions and food safety recalls, this position offers the opportunity to tackle meaningful challenges and make a difference statewide. This position requires routine statewide duties, including fieldwork, inspections, investigations, or direct services that extend beyond the employee’s domicile parish. These statewide responsibilities are an inherent and ongoing part of the job and may require frequent travel.

Requirements

• Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license
• Three years of experience as a sanitarian; OR A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus two years of experience as a sanitarian.
• Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Responsibilities

• Conducts inspections of retail food markets, restaurants, and other food establishments to verify sanitary conditions and compliance with the State Sanitary Code.
• Inspects sewage and waste disposal systems for residential, commercial, community, and trailer park facilities to ensure proper waste disposal and compliance with applicable regulations.
• Manages and directs inspections of institutions, including schools, prisons, day care centers, nursing homes, and other facilities, to verify sanitary and hygienic conditions.
• Directs investigations and resolution of complaints involving unsanitary conditions, nuisances, and other environmental or public health concerns.
• Administers Sanitarian Services programs within the designated parish by implementing program guidelines, monitoring productivity, maintaining accurate records, and preparing activity reports.
• Directs environmental and public health activities during emergencies, including floods, hurricanes, vandalism, and accidental contamination, which may require work outside normal business hours and on weekends.
• Communicates with public officials, civic groups, and community stakeholders regarding environmental and public health concerns; participates in required training and continuing education to maintain professional expertise and licensure.
