About The Position

The Transformer Prep / Sanding Technician is responsible for preparing transformers and related equipment for the painting and finishing process. This position performs surface preparation activities including sanding, grinding, cleaning, washing, masking, and inspecting transformer surfaces to ensure they are properly prepared for coating or painting. The position requires the regular use of hand-held orbital sanders, grinders, and other sanding or surface-preparation tools. Employees must be able to identify rust, bumps, rough areas, and other surface imperfections that could affect the quality of the finished product. This is a physically demanding position performed in an open-shop industrial environment where employees may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, sun, dust, noise, and other changing environmental conditions.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify deviations from established specifications.
  • Ability to work in extreme cold temperatures.

  • Must meet applicable requirements for the use of respiratory protection when required by the position.

Responsibilities

  • Sand and prepare transformers and related components for painting and finishing.
  • Use hand-held orbital sanders, grinders, sanding tools, and other approved equipment to remove rust, excess material, rough areas, and surface imperfections.
  • Inspect transformer surfaces to identify bumps, rust, debris, uneven areas, and other defects requiring additional preparation.
  • Grind, sand, or smooth designated surfaces according to work instructions and quality requirements.
  • Wash and clean transformers to remove dirt, dust, grease, residue, and other impurities before painting.
  • Properly prepare surfaces to promote paint and coating adhesion.
  • Tape, mask, or cover designated areas that should not be painted or coated.
  • Remove tape, masking materials, and other preparation materials as required.
  • Follow work orders, production instructions, and established work processes.
  • Verify that assigned units are properly prepared before advancing them to the painting or coating process.
  • Safely operate assigned hand and power tools.
  • Inspect tools and equipment before use and report damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Properly handle and store tools, materials, and PPE.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Wear required PPE, including respiratory protection, paint/protective suits, gloves, eye protection, and safety-toe footwear, as required by the task and work area.
  • Communicate quality concerns, damaged components, or surface defects to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Work cooperatively with painters, production personnel, quality personnel, and supervisors to maintain production flow.
  • Perform additional production, material-preparation, cleaning, or general labor duties as assigned.
