Under general supervision, follows established safety and operating procedures to clean metal castings in accordance with quality standards. Ensures that documentation, tooling and parts are correctly matched to paperwork. The Sandblaster Objective is to use air or mechanical blast methods and/or acid and caustic methods to remove foreign material from castings conforming to visual and dimensional specifications on technique cards. Essential Job Functions include following established housekeeping and safety practices, performing visual and dimensional inspection of castings, adjusting equipment, inspecting own parts for surface distortion and imperfections, loading blast material, and potentially using caustic and/or acid dip after proper training. The role requires maintaining equipment in a safe manner, working well with others, notifying the supervisor of low workload, and demonstrating a willingness to learn. The employee must know and understand all general plant and department safety rules and policies, have the physical ability to perform the functions, and recognize and communicate production problems to the supervisor. Maintaining above-average production efficiency, demonstrating proper procedures for signing off department documents, and knowing the approximate cost of equipment and supplies are also key aspects. The role requires interpreting a surface comparator and having the necessary eye-to-hand coordination to meet surface finish requirements. A practical test is required, including reading and interpreting paperwork, understanding sandblast and chemical cleaning equipment, demonstrating completion of shop numbers to specifications, and loading blast material. The individual must be able to run the department efficiently with minimal assistance, complete departmental paperwork in detail, explain the logic of all phases, and make cost analysis decisions with good judgment. The ability to log onto the main computer system, extract information, log time, enter inventory amounts, and forward to the next operation is necessary. There should be no violations of safety rules. The employee must be able to clean all types of castings using sandblast, shot blast, or chemical methods, including adjusting nozzles and pressure, interpreting surface comparators, operating dust collectors, and maintaining chemical cleaning systems. Knowledge of safety procedures for sandblast equipment, salt bath, and acid cleaning is required. Accessing the main computer system to maintain accurate records of work performed and accurately forward inventory is also part of the role. The position meets all production and quality standards, and other duties as assigned.
