About The Position

Fire Watch Attendants monitor activities inside and outside confined spaces, usually alongside other workers. The role is responsible for watching for workplace fire hazards, maintaining safety-permit conditions, preventing flammable materials from reaching ignition sources, and responding to fires or emergencies. Attendants maintain communication and, where possible, visual and voice contact with workers; inspect the work area before and during shifts for potential releases of flammable vapors or liquids; and remain at the job site while work is underway. They must be prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts. After operations, they check for sparks, embers, and other fire hazards, return firefighting equipment to its original location, and remain at the site for 30 minutes after quitting time to ensure no fire has started. For confined-space operations, the attendant remains outside the space until relieved, tracks entrants, understands potential hazards and exposure effects, and monitors conditions inside and outside the space. The attendant orders entrants to evacuate when prohibited or dangerous conditions occur or when the attendant cannot safely perform required duties, and summons rescue or emergency services when entrants may need help escaping. The attendant also warns unauthorized people away from the space, directs anyone who entered to exit, and informs authorized entrants and the supervisor. Non-entry rescues may be performed when allowed by the employer’s rescue procedure and the attendant is trained to do so. The job is performed in a field environment and may involve wet, humid, and outdoor conditions, heavy winds, strong smells, and vibration. Workers may need to work at heights and in hot or cold temperatures, sometimes inside confined spaces, and be able to perform duties for extended periods. The role requires frequent travel or relocation and frequent overtime. Hiring range is $22.00–$24.00 per hour; the maximum rate depends on successfully meeting required customer or jobsite demands, and candidates who do not meet them may receive a lower rate within the range. Per diem is paid based on days worked and may be adjusted for partial shifts; eligibility resumes after returning to active project duty following an absence for a scheduled shift.
