The ASU Safety Technician applies general safety and environmental knowledge to monitor the workplace environment and investigates safety concerns and/or accidents. Provides assistance in monitoring activities to ensure the health and safety of the university community. This role performs routine and frequent heavy labor tasks related to on and off-site handling, storage, packaging, transport, and/or disposal of hazardous materials. It processes routine incoming hazardous material shipments and arranges for the safe handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials. The position may assist in maintaining inventory and storage of hazardous materials and participates in processing hazardous materials, which includes receiving, logging, labeling, segregating, classifying, and packaging. The technician also participates in site visits to audit, provide consultation, and/or conduct inspections of university facilities using hazardous materials and processes, ensuring compliance with regulations. They consult with faculty, staff, and students to provide technical assistance and answer safety-related questions, and perform pollution prevention and sustainability field activities. The role involves developing checklists, identifying problems with the handling of hazardous materials, and taking measurements to satisfy regulatory requirements. It includes preparing data and drafting reports, communicating with customers on safety matters, and assisting with reviewing and implementing compliance activities and policies. The technician investigates and alerts management of regulatory changes and may assist with incoming and outgoing hazardous materials shipments. They also assist with the development and guidance for safe management of hazardous processes and materials, and operate specialized equipment for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, laser measurements, and radiation detection. The role maintains inventory and storage management systems for hazardous materials, participates in project teams for special studies, and coordinates/facilitates safety education, outreach, and workshops. Additionally, they train staff to calibrate and maintain monitoring equipment, serve as a back-up for calibration/maintenance, and may assist with creating and maintaining safety databases. The technician assists in conducting accident and incident investigations, recommends corrective actions, and works on project teams to develop training materials. They also assist with environmental programs to ensure regulatory compliance and may serve as a member of the department emergency response team.
