About The Position

Working as a Safety Technician involves protecting people by making sure that risks in the workplace are properly controlled. These duties include conducting safety audits of ships, ship unit sections, and the physical plant as assigned. The role requires recording and auditing results in electronic format on an iPad utilizing the TruQC Program, identifying and correcting unsafe workplace conditions and/or individual unsafe acts/behaviors. The technician will demonstrate knowledge of behavioral safety concepts, participate and guide Safety Action Teams/Committees, and train employees on proper use of fall protection systems, mobile and overhead equipment, respirator use/fit testing, and hazard awareness training. Additionally, the role involves performing New Employee Orientation and communicating EHS policy and procedure effectively with personnel at all levels.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle conflict, follow direction and decisions making.
  • Ability to communicate with large groups of employees.
  • No fear of heights or confined spaces.
  • Candidate must have strong communication skills, specifically with large groups of employees and with personnel at all levels.
  • Candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, be a team player, and be flexible and able to adjust to changing priorities.
  • Prior experience as a trainer.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in occupational health and safety or related discipline.
  • A degree in an accredited safety program.
  • Prior work experience and / or BIW experience may be substituted with consideration given to the following:
  • Prior experience operating mobile equipment and aerial lift equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations and prior safety experience.
  • Prior hazard analysis experience.
  • Prior experience in safety training.
  • Prior BIW Safety Team participation.
  • Prior safety experience in an industrial environment.
