About The Position

The Safety Specialist is responsible for leading, developing, implementing, and continuously improving safety programs that protect employees, patients, and the public. This role ensures regulatory compliance, drives risk reduction strategies, leads incident investigations, oversees safety training, and actively promotes a strong organizational safety culture. The Safety Specialist collaborates with local, state, and federal emergency management and public health agencies on preparedness, response planning, and safety coordination. This role fosters employee engagement in safety initiatives through feedback and participation in safety committees, while leveraging current and emerging safety technologies to enhance program effectiveness. Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive incident data in compliance with healthcare privacy standards.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of safety culture experience (EMS, healthcare, or transportation preferred)
  • Infectious Control Officer training (can be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and applicable state/local safety regulations
  • Proficiency in safety management software platforms and Microsoft Office
  • Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable and insurable driving record
  • Completion of NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 (or ability to obtain within 6 months)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, EMS, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • Experience in EMS, healthcare, or transportation environments
  • Familiarity with just-culture frameworks and data-driven safety management
  • Prior experience with accreditation standards or external safety audits

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company-wide Safety Management System utilizing the Ninth Brain Suite and Samsara applications
  • Conduct ongoing safety policy reviews and provide recommendations for updates, enhancements, and corrective improvements
  • Ensure policies reflect regulatory standards, operational realities, and best practices
  • Promote a proactive and just safety culture through employee engagement, education/training, accountability, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in consistent monthly safety meetings with key leadership
  • Plan, Develop, and Coordinate a safety committee addressing: Incident trends, Vehicle safety, Injury prevention, Exposure prevention, Regulatory updates, Lessons learned / near-miss reviews
  • Document attendance, topics covered, and action items
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, DOT, and applicable federal/state/local safety regulations
  • Lead internal safety audits and support external inspections
  • Work directly with regulatory and external agencies to address compliance issues and coordinate joint safety initiatives
  • Update policies and training based on regulatory changes
  • Maintain confidential records as needed
  • Conduct hazard assessments and operational risk evaluations
  • Analyze safety data and identify trends
  • Implement corrective and preventive risk-reduction strategies
  • Develop and maintain a reporting system for anonymous near-miss incidents, encouraging open reporting and continuous improvement
  • Perform investigations for select incidents, vehicle collisions, and employee injuries
  • Develop corrective action plans to prevent recurrence
  • Maintain accurate documentation and regulatory reporting when required
  • Provide recommendations on engineering and product selection for injury prevention
  • Review video footage associated with: Vehicle collisions, Complaints, High-risk driving events, Random safety audits
  • Monitor driver safety trends and behaviors
  • Ensure coaching and corrective actions are completed in a timely manner
  • Report to the Clinical Operations Manager any failures to meet coaching/corrective action plans
  • Participate in after-action reviews and emergency response drills as needed
  • Collaborate with Operations leadership to ensure: Driver coaching is performed, Safety violations are addressed, Corrective actions are tracked
  • Provide recommendations for disciplinary or retraining actions when necessary
  • Develop and deliver safety education programs, including: New hire safety orientation, Annual safety refreshers, Driver safety training, PPE & exposure prevention, Injury prevention
  • Maintain training compliance records
  • Track and report: Vehicle accident trends, OSHA recordables, Near-misses, Exposures, Injury frequency/severity, Coaching compliance
  • Provide regular safety performance reports to leadership
  • Performing special duties as assigned
