About The Position

Patriot Engineering and Environmental is growing and is looking for a Safety Specialist to join our talented and impactful team in Indianapolis office. Headquartered in Indianapolis, IN, Patriot Engineering and Environmental is an Employee Owned, diverse engineering firm with a multi-state locations and presence providing geotechnical, environmental, and construction materials testing services and consultation to commercial, industrial and governmental clients. This is a great career growth opportunity for the right candidate. We are seeking a self-starter Safety Specialist with at least 3 years of experience to join our Safety team. Patriot is committed to providing a safe and injury free working environment for all staff. This role offers great exposure to all aspects of Safety operations and will focus on supporting the management of EHS compliance for Patriot and its corporate safety program for Patriot’s 200+ employees located in 10 offices operating in multiple states. We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible, and personable individual with an eye for detail, a willingness to learn, and a desire to be part of a growing and high performing team. In this role you will work directly with our Corporate Safety Director.

Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety or an appropriate technical/related discipline.
  • 1- 3 years of safety/EHS experience (or closely related experience).
  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk, prioritize actions, and make sound recommendations with minimal direction, including handling competing priorities and ambiguous situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to advise leaders and drive follow-through on corrective actions.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort working with compliance documentation, reports, and training records.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment while also working independently and managing multiple initiatives simultaneously.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with OSHA compliance (29 CFR Part 1910) including program review, development, implementation, and training.
  • Ability to monitor and interpret new or proposed regulations/technical developments and communicate applicability to leaders and staff.
  • Strong partnering skills with branch managers, group leads, and staff; personable and collaborative.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to other company locations (up to 25% local travel).

Responsibilities

  • Support development and implementation of an internal Safety Management System. Identify gaps, recommend enhancements, and help drive consistent execution across locations.
  • Independently evaluate safety risks, compare alternative corrective actions, and make recommendations on matters that impact operations, compliance, and employee safety.
  • Provide practical, solution-oriented guidance to leaders and employees to drive timely and effective risk reduction.
  • Has stop‑work authority to intervene and halt work activities when an imminent danger or serious unsafe condition is observed. Initiate immediate hazard mitigation actions, coordinate appropriate notifications, and confirm conditions are corrected before work resumes.
  • Support administration and continuous improvement of Patriot’s Safety and Health policies, programs, and procedures. Recommend program updates and process improvements to strengthen compliance and reduce risk.
  • Conduct safety and health field audits; identify, document, and recommend resolutions for hazardous conditions. Prioritize corrective actions, communicate findings to stakeholders, and follow up to confirm completion and effectiveness.
  • Assist with incident investigations, including determining contributing factors and recommending corrective/preventive actions. Track and report action items through closure and share learnings to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist with workers’ compensation case management and related documentation, including return-to-work coordination as needed.
  • Conduct new hire onboarding and deliver ongoing safety training. Refresh training materials and recommend training improvements based on trends, audit results, and observed needs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable safety regulations and best practices. Interpret requirements for Patriot operations and communicate expectations clearly to leaders and employees.
  • Support federal, state, and local safety inspections and related compliance activities, including documentation and response coordination.
  • Manage programs such as substance abuse and medical surveillance.
  • Manage pre-qualification applications and contractor management portals. Recommend workflow improvements to strengthen compliance tracking and documentation quality.
  • Manage in-house PPE inventories and support PPE selection/standards based on hazard evaluations and job needs.
  • Promote safety awareness and culture throughout the company. Participate in safety committee meetings and propose engagement initiatives that improve participation and outcomes.
  • Interact professionally with clients and Patriot employees. Collaborate with leadership on strategic alignment and execution of safety initiatives. Bring fresh ideas to improve recruiting, engagement, and development strategies.
