About the Work Unit The Region 4 (Northeastern Colorado) Safety Work Unit manages regional and statewide employee safety programs. It also oversees safety operations for the state's public transportation infrastructure and facilities within the region. About the Position The Safety Specialist III will be based out of either Burlington or Limon depending on the selected candidate. Position will work with the Region's Occupational Safety and Health programs. This position will develop and maintain tracking systems for Region safety programs; perform safety inspections, audits, and evaluations; identify and document workplace hazards and corrective actions; evaluate hazard-control measures; track and support required safety training; and provide technical assistance related to Region safety initiatives.

Requirements

At least 6 years of experience related to occupational health and safety or industrial hygiene.
At least 1 year of this experience must have a primary focus in occupational safety.
A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 6 years.
Education from an accredited college or university with coursework in occupational safety, safety science, industrial hygiene, industrial safety engineering, or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.
Experience with a primary focus in occupational safety will be considered.
Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

Responsibilities

Implement and maintain a program for identification of hazards evaluation and assessment of the probability and severity of loss events and accidents.
Conduct hazard analyses and the subsequent interpretation and documentation of results for the RSO managers and employees.
Conduct reviews of processes and operations for potential failure modes and their causes and effects.
Review, compile, analyze, and interpret data from accident and loss prevention reports, along with other sources, regarding injuries, illnesses, and damage to determine causes and trends.
Provides safety bulletins and other information for dissemination at meetings and via e-mail.
Conduct field observations and workplace inspections to identify existing and potential safety hazards, unsafe work practices, and conditions that may contribute to employee injury, illness, property damage, or operational loss.
Evaluate identified hazards using established safety standards, regulations, policies, and accepted safety practices; documents findings and assist in developing corrective actions or recommendations to reduce or eliminate exposure.
Advise and educate others on hazard controls and hazard control programs.
Serve on the Region Safety Committee and on the Region Accident Review Board.
Implement and provide ongoing evaluation of hazard control methods and procedures, including PPE requirements, work practices, engineering controls, and administrative controls, to determine whether established measures are effectively reducing employee exposure and loss.
Maintain current knowledge of occupational safety and health laws, regulations, and standards in order to provide technical advice and support about compliance with occupational safety and health laws, regulations, and standards.
