About The Position

The Wellin Museum Safety Officer position provides safety, security, and guest services in public and non-public areas during normal museum operating hours. This is a non-benefited, part-time/on-call role, with total work hours limited to under 910 per year. The position may include evenings and weekends, offering flexibility for individuals seeking a few hours a week or an on-call schedule. This role provides a unique way to engage with the college community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a New York State Security Guard License
  • Exceptional observation skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with museum guests and campus constituents
  • Ability to observe and report irregularities
  • Ability to take appropriate action in emergency situations
  • Ability to disseminate information in a courteous manner
  • Knowledge of proper use of emergency, communications, and security equipment
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to perform basic computer application skills

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the security and protection of museum property, exhibits, classrooms, and assets.
  • Conduct hourly rounds to ensure visitor and property safety, checking exhibitions, art storage rooms, mechanical rooms, stairwells, fire exits, fire extinguishers, and pull boxes. Document issues in a log book and advise the supervisor on duty of any concerns.
  • Responsible for building security, door security, opening and closing of public and non-public areas, and building rounds.
  • Perform identification checks and clearance of guests entering the museum.
  • Ensure the safety of all persons on museum property.
  • Maintain records reflecting the physical condition of museum property as it applies to safety and security issues.
  • Responsible for response to emergency calls and may perform CPR or First Aid in emergency situations.
  • Act as an Evacuation Monitor during emergency situations.
  • Escort approved visitors through non-public areas and may monitor individuals working in art storage rooms.
  • Inspect parcels.
  • Maintain a daily log and draft incident reports as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
