About The Position

The Public Works Department, in the City of Saint Paul, is hiring a Safety Officer that will develop occupational and health programs, provide safety training, and investigate accidents and injuries and their causes. Here’s what you can expect to do: Develop, maintain, and coordinate the department’s workplace injury and prevention program and policies. Create and implement safety education and training programs for employees, ensuring Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance. Establish, update, and improve department emergency management plans for employee safety and investigate occupational accidents, injuries, and potentially hazardous workplace conditions including examining causes, maintaining and analyzing records, and recommending appropriate actions. Serve as main point of contact for federal and state agencies as well as the lead contact for contractors and vendors for safety activities. Proactively identify accident prevention measures and engage in inspection and enforcement measures, additionally implementing accident prevention approaches to reduce worker compensation claims and ensure safe work environments. Lead and collaborate with divisions regarding safety meetings, participate in City-wide safety meetings, and participate in department safety and management meetings, advising the management team of injury and collision trends, gaps in safety readiness, and emerging workplace safety issues. For more information and essential functions, see our job description: Safety Officer Information Specific to this Position: This position is located at 25 W 4th St, St Paul, MN 55102 (City Hall Annex Building) and works a daytime schedule with most days of the week in the office (limited remote work), Weekend and evening work will be required occasionally to conduct training.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience in safety program development and safety training.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's Degree in safety may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
