About The Position

This is highly responsible administrative and technical work coordinating a citywide safety and accident prevention program. Work involves the responsibility for planning, implementing, and promoting comprehensive safety initiatives designed to reduce workplace injuries, property damage, and public liability incidents. Work also includes employee safety education and training, regulatory compliance, inspections of City facilities, equipment, and working conditions, accident investigations, and the continuous improvement of loss prevention strategies. Work is performed with considerable independence within established safety standards, administrative policies, labor agreements, and regulatory requirements. The incumbent provides technical guidance to departments and assists in ensuring the consistent application of safety policies citywide, including policies applicable to bargaining unit employees.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years professional experience administering safety and accident prevention programs, which must include conducting inspections and incident investigations.
  • A Valid Driver’s License from any state may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver’s License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained as valid throughout employment.
  • Proof of education in the form of a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Copy of valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however, a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) is required at time of appointment and must be maintained valid throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, or a related field and experience conducting trainings and oral presentations are preferred.
  • A CSP (Certified Safety Professional) designation or similar credential is desirable.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates accident prevention, loss control, and safety programs.
  • Conducts both announced and unannounced inspections of facilities, equipment, vehicles, safety devices, and work practices to identify hazardous or noncompliant conditions.
  • Participates in and/or leads investigations of employee injuries, occupational illnesses, property damage incidents, and public liability accidents, as needed.
  • Performs root cause analyses and recommends corrective and preventive actions.
  • Reviews injury and accident reports; compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data; and prepares written reports and presentations for management.
  • Provides technical safety guidance and assistance to all departments.
  • Interprets applicable safety laws, regulations, codes, and standards; and recommends alternative compliance methods when appropriate.
  • Assists in the development, revision, and implementation of facility safety policies and procedures.
  • Conducts employee and supervisor safety training sessions using established instructional methods.
  • Consults with department leadership to recommend safe work practices, equipment, safety measures, and procedural improvements.
  • Tracks, analyzes, and submits key safety performance metrics to measure progress toward established safety performance goals.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
