Safety Officer I - Division 1
About The Position
The Safety Officer I supports the Division’s safety program by administering assigned safety initiatives, delivering a wide range of safety training, and conducting comprehensive worksite, facility, and operational audits to identify hazards and ensure regulatory compliance. This role assists with hazard communication requirements, maintains accident and injury records, and helps coordinate division-wide safety meetings, incident investigations, and corrective action tracking. The Safety Officer I also contributes to division safety campaigns, health and safety events, and serves as the Division training coordinator. Work involves regular collaboration with division leadership, unit heads, and frontline employees and requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to recognize trends, implement improvements, and promote a safe working environment across diverse field operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with a major in safety management, occupational safety, industrial technology, or one of the physical sciences from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of one year of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of CDL (Commercial Drivers License) laws and NCDMV laws/requirements
- Ability to operate computer with Windows based software and proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel and Access database)
- Possess skills and abilities to develop and deliver safety training to large groups
- Deep knowledge and understanding of proper MUTCD requirements and field application
- Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle
- Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle
- Safety toe shoes required
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of State, Federal, and OSHA Safety and Health standards
- Experience developing, coordinating and presenting training programs on a variety of safety topics
- Demonstrated ability to recognize unsafe conditions or acts, and to determine corrective action
- Knowledge of the Worker’s Compensation Act and OSHA regulations
- Experience interpreting and explaining policies, procedures, and laws
