About The Position

The Safety Manager supports the Safety Director in the development, implementation and oversight of the corporate safety and health program as well as ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local laws and practices. This role manages the safety program on moderate to complex projects, stays current on trends, practices and legal issues, and conducts random safety audits. The Safety Manager interfaces with the estimating department to assist in cost evaluation and program design changes, establishes relationships with clients' safety staff, and ensures the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the department/work unit. This position requires travel to Company and subsidiary offices, offsite client, subcontractor, and supplier meetings, and other locations across North America. The role also involves training, coaching, disciplining, and developing employees, managing the workforce in accordance with policies, issuing disciplinary actions, leading investigations and OSHA visits, and managing Environmental Compliance inspections. The Safety Manager escalates potential losses/injury exposures to the Risk Management Department, involves the Safety Director in significant issues, monitors treatment trajectory and RTW criteria for injured employees, maintains records, initiates incentive programs, and writes/develops emergency action plans and updates orientation materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety, Engineering, Construction Management or related field and 10-15 years’ relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CHST required.
  • OSHA Authorized Trainer and Safety Certification required.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications required.
  • Willing to be stationed at any project site across North America.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the safety program on moderate to complex projects.
  • Remains current on trends, practices and legal issues.
  • Conducts random safety audits and reviews results using statistical evaluation, audit reports and feedback.
  • Interfaces with estimating department by assisting in cost evaluation and program design changes that will meet various owners' and clients' needs.
  • Establishes relationships with clients' safety staff.
  • Ensures the safe, effective and efficient operation of the department/work unit.
  • Travels to Company and subsidiary offices; offsite client, subcontractor, and supplier meetings; and other locations across North America to fulfill the essential duties of the role as required.
  • Exhibits regular and reliable attendance in person as required by the Supervisor, Company guidelines, and/or project and office obligations.
  • Effectively trains, coaches, discipline, and develops employees to achieve and maintain positive working relationships within the department.
  • Manages the workforce in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Issues appropriate disciplinary actions when infractions occur.
  • Achieves desired results through effective leadership and appropriate influence, and adheres to established policies and procedures.
  • Determines methods and courses of action to achieve departmental and organizational goals through effective financial planning and financial performance of the department/work unit.
  • Leads investigations and finalizes reports.
  • Leads and manages OSHA visits and assists in defense if citations are issued.
  • Leads Environmental Compliance inspections.
  • Escalates potential losses/injury exposures to Risk Management Department.
  • Involves Safety Director in a timely manner with issues that could have a significant impact on safety performance or client perception.
  • Monitors treatment trajectory and RTW criteria for injured employees.
  • Maintains records on project that reflect training, regulatory compliance and safety meeting documentation.
  • Initiates incentive programs that encourage positive contributions to safety culture.
  • Writes and develops emergency action plans for individual projects.
  • Updates Orientation materials as a project changes or builds out.
