Safety Engineering Manager - Mining Deployments

Pronto•San Francisco, CA
•$195,000 - $240,000•Onsite

About The Position

Pronto AI is a global leader in commercializing autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, deploying Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS) that automate operations in mines, quarries, and construction sites worldwide. While much of the industry remains in R&D, we deliver real, production-ready autonomy that is already operating in the field. We are on a mission to make mining operations safer, smarter, and more efficient through cutting-edge technology, and we are building toward becoming the world’s first profitable AV technology company.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in systems safety, safety engineering, or a closely related systems discipline in a safety-critical domain.
  • Experience building a safety argument from scratch (claims, evidence, structure) and defending its sufficiency.
  • Structured hazard analysis depth at both the system and operational levels, with the judgment to select appropriate methods.
  • Experience writing safety processes (investigation, triage, qualification) rather than inheriting them.
  • Comfortable leading one or two people while still being the primary author of the safety case.
  • Proficiency in Python or SQL sufficient to work with event data independently.
  • Willingness to travel to sites when needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Off-road, heavy vehicle, or industrial machinery experience (mining, quarrying, aggregates, construction, ports, or agriculture).
  • Working knowledge of US mine safety regulation, including MSHA Part 46 and 48 training requirements and Part 50 reporting.
  • Experience commissioning autonomous or remotely operated equipment on a customer's site.
  • Experience adapting an existing safety method into a new domain.
  • Experience building a small team from a standing start.

Responsibilities

  • Build the off-road truck safety case, including claims, evidence, limits, and open items. Keep it current as trucks, sites, and software change, and be clear about what it does not cover.
  • Conduct hazard analysis, considering what the installation introduces, what the site already carries, and what the combination creates. Drive the results into requirements and site controls.
  • Define test preparation, including what must be demonstrated before a truck operates autonomously at a site, the procedures, acceptance criteria, and the evidence each test produces.
  • Hold the commissioning gate between installed and operating, specifying when a site is not ready.
  • Own the incident intake path, severity model, investigations, and corrective actions through to verified closure.
  • Assess the impact of software releases, new truck variants, or new site layouts on the safety argument and determine what must happen before they go live.
  • Grow and lead a small team of one or two engineers, taking on recurring load while retaining ownership of the safety case, commissioning gate, and critical investigations.
  • Utilize AI tooling to enhance productivity in drafting and maintaining site risk assessments, adapting procedures, triaging event backlogs, and identifying cross-site patterns.
  • Build and maintain personal tooling rather than filing tickets for it, ensuring its continued operation for dependent users.
