About The Position

The Safety Engineer’s role is to work with the Team Safety to help us minimize the risk of job-related accidents, monitor operations to eliminate hazardous activities and develop policies to promote occupational health and safety awareness. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, related field, 4 years of safety experience in the construction industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification to teach OSHA 10/30, forklift certification, first aid/CPR and respiratory fitting is required and must be maintained.
  • 2 years experience in Safety.
  • Ability to provide leadership and inspire exceptional cooperation from Foremen and crews.
  • Strong presentation skills to speak effectively before small and large groups.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Physically able to negotiate difficult job site conditions, including climbing stairs, riding lifts, and working in various environmental conditions.
  • Capable of obtaining customer and general contractor approval to walk job sites.
  • Willing to travel to different job sites daily or multiple sites per day.
  • Ability to support field personnel and customers on projects.
  • Flexibility on hours and location of work dependent on project requirements and supervisor determination.
  • Ability to walk and maintain balance over rough, icy, or muddy ground, climb stairs and ladders, work safely at heights, and work effectively exposed to weather for long periods.

Responsibilities

  • Inspire and motivate leaders and individuals to have a "Safety Attitude for Life."
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and "near misses" and manage the accident investigation process.
  • Investigate accidents and injuries to determine causes and preventability.
  • Interview customers, managers, and employees to understand work environments and incidents.
  • Evaluate corrective actions taken to remedy incidents.
  • Work with customers to resolve safety matters.
  • Manage open injury claims and oversee the back-to-work program for light duty and "kept on salary" employees, coordinating with the Safety Manager and retro group manager.
  • Assist Foremen and provide monthly feedback to Hermanson management on accident-related activities, root causes, costs, and prevention.
  • Tour jobsites and shops with Foremen, Superintendents, and Project Managers to identify hazards, unsafe habits, and intervene in unsafe activities.
  • Conduct new hire orientation, site-specific safety training, and organize/conduct crew training (e.g., forklift, aerial lift, fall protection, trenching, confined space).
  • Develop site-specific safety manuals, fall protection work plans, and job hazard analyses.
  • Assist the Safety Manager in maintaining and updating the company’s accident prevention program.
  • Develop procedures and systems to protect people and property.
  • Conduct weekly job-site audits, identify and correct hazards, document safety visits, and administer drug tests.
  • Review plans and specifications for new machinery and equipment to ensure safety compliance.
  • Review employee safety programs and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure Foremen comply with DOSH safety and health regulations, complete Pre-Task Planning, and follow the Accident Prevention Program.
  • Attend monthly safety committee meetings and ensure weekly safety meetings are conducted on job sites.
  • Compile records related to safety and health for company-wide information gathering.
  • Make necessary updates and additions in accordance with Washington State Laws regarding worker safety, property protection, motor vehicle safety, and public/customer safety, staying abreast of legal changes.
