About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Labor is seeking a Safety Consultant to join the NDOL OSHA Consultation team. This role involves conducting safety inspections and education programs, enforcing state safety laws, and recommending corrective actions for compliance. The position offers a salary range of $22.010 - $32.446 per hour, with potential adjustments based on applicant's education and experience.

Requirements

  • Post high school coursework/training in: mechanical, civil, electrical, industrial, or architectural engineering, industrial education, or occupational/industrial safety OR Experience in: the operation and/or supervision of the operation of industrial equipment or machinery, OR Responsibility for the coordination and/or management of a safety/accident prevention program, accident analysis and reporting function, or occupational safety standard compliance/enforcement activities.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation required.
  • Knowledge of: Federal OSHA standards; State safety laws; principles and practices of safety in industrial and/or construction workplaces; engineering principles and methods, as applied to accident prevention and safety education; the operation, repair or maintenance of industrial machinery and construction equipment; proper and safe methods and procedures for operating industrial or construction equipment.
  • Skilled in: public speaking; business and technical writing; proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Access, Word, Excel and Power Point).
  • Ability to: communicate orally and in writing thoughts, ideas, and recommendations; interact to establish and maintain work relationships with plant managers and safety directors, union representatives, employers, employees, and the public; present technical information clearly and logically to engineers, other inspectors and the public; plan and schedule one's personal workload; work independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, mechanical engineering, or other related discipline; and/or substituted by three years of occupational safety experience in interpretation, and/or application of OSHA standards, Life safety codes or standards, and/or investigating or analyzing occupational safety hazards, and/or industrial accidents, and/or planning/conducting a safety/accident prevention program.

Responsibilities

  • Contact public and private employers to determine if employers wish to utilize the services offered through the Nebraska safety inspection program.
  • Inspect businesses and industrial places of employment to ensure compliance with Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act standards, and State laws, rules and regulations which affect employee safety.
  • Advise employers of violations or potential violations of Federal OSHA standards to provide employers the opportunity to meet OSHA standards through corrective action.
  • Recommend changes in safety practices which would enable employers to meet Federal OSHA requirements.
  • Interpret safety laws, rules and regulations for employers and their employees, and advise them of any changes to enable employers and their employees to stay abreast of current safety laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Observe employees in work settings to ensure they are complying with State safety laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Advise employers and employees on the application and use of safety guards on moving machinery parts and in the exercise of safe techniques and methods used in operation of machinery to promote safe work conditions, habits and practices in the work place.
  • Instruct employers and employees in areas of safety practices or procedures in which they lack specific knowledge of experience to update employers and employees knowledge of safety programs, practices and procedures.
  • Investigate complaints concerning alleged safety hazards or alleged violations of safety laws or regulations to determine if safety hazards exist or if safety laws and regulations have been violated.
  • Write and submit inspection reports along with recommendations for corrective action to meet internal reporting requirements.
  • Collect and report data on industrial safety accidents and their causes to meet reporting requirements and to provide data for statistical analysis.
