About The Position

The inpatient Child Psychiatric Unit is a 12-bed unit. It is a short-term child-oriented program designed to provide crisis intervention and stabilization to ages 3yrs-13ys (Children) and 14yrs-17yrs (Adolescent). One of the primary goals of the treatment team and therapeutic community is to teach and encourage children and adolescents to use positive behavioral strategies and skills to cope better with stressful situations or overwhelming emotions. Our aim is that our patients will then use this more effective way of coping in their home and community following discharge from the hospital.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED (Required)
• Enrolled in an accredited Nursing Program or comparable clinical healthcare program (Required)
• Psychology Student who has completed at least 20 credits in required Psychology courses (1/2 credit toward psych degree) completed/ Sophomore year of psych degree program (Required)
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required)

Nice To Haves

• Previous pediatric or childcare experience (Preferred)

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Safety Attendant will provide 1:1 observation, assist to provide care and prevent the patient from harm.
• Will assist with the patient's care based on valid competencies.
• Provide diversion activities and conversations that are distracting and therapeutic.
• Engage in age specific play activities that are distracting and therapeutic (i.e. board games, card games, painting, reading); reinforce positive behavior.
• Provide support as outlined in the plan of care.
• Assist in activities of daily living, including but not limited to washing, toileting, position changes and assistance with meals.
• Keep room clean and tidy.
• Maintain a calm environment.
• Act in the role of Patient Service Associate when cross-trained and no safety attendants needed.
• Adhere to principles of pediatric safety to ensure a safe environment for patients through use of handrails, seatbelts, patient accessibility to call bell, etc.
• Maintain standard precautions as ordered for patient.
• Report safety hazards to staff (i.e. broken furniture/broken equipment).
• Report pertinent patient information and call for assistance if the patient develops destructive behaviors i.e. pulling lines.
• With RN establish priorities for individual patient; communicate with team members to establish priority tasks.
• Maintain regular communication with RN related to assigned duties and patient behavior; perform activities within prescribed scope and seek clarification when needed.
• Confer with RN when confronted with unfamiliar patient care issue.
